Image enhancement is to enhance the information that users are interested in in the image by processing the image data, so as to improve the visual effect of the image and facilitate computer processing. Although image enhancement does not increase the information in the image data, it will expand the dynamic range of features such as edges, contours, and contrast, making it easier to detect and identify these features. Due to the inherent characteristics of thermal imaging, the quality of thermal infrared images is generally low, so image enhancement is often necessary.

Thermal infrared image enhancement methods include spatial domain methods and transform domain methods. The spatial domain method operates on each pixel in the pixel space of the image, and achieves the purpose of enhancement by correcting the gray value of the pixel. The transformation domain method is to modify the parameters of the image in a certain transformation domain to achieve the purpose of enhancing the characteristics of the transformation domain, and then get the enhanced image through inverse transformation to the pixel space. The selection of specific enhancement methods should be determined according to image characteristics and application requirements.
