Compared with infrared thermal imaging, infrared polarization imaging has the following advantages:
① Polarization imaging can achieve quite high accuracy without accurate radiation calibration. This is because the degree of polarization is the ratio of radiation values. In traditional infrared thermal imaging, calibration is very important for the measurement accuracy of infrared thermal imaging;
②Infrared polarization imaging has obvious advantages in identifying vehicle targets in the background of ground objects. Research shows that the degree of infrared polarization of ground objects in the natural environment is very small and the degree of infrared polarization of metal materials is relatively large. The polarization degree of the vehicle is quite different from the polarization degree of the ground object background, which is beneficial to improve the contrast between the target and the background;
③ The main method of infrared protection in military is to create a complex background, so that the infrared system cannot distinguish the target from the background, but there are differences in the polarization characteristics of this chaotic heat source and the target, so this form of protection is suitable for infrared polarization imaging reconnaissance. will fail;
④ For targets and backgrounds with the same radiation intensity, infrared imaging cannot distinguish them, but infrared polarization imaging can distinguish them well.
But adding polarization to infrared imaging reduces the amount of radiation received by 50 percent. In some cases, reducing the amount of IR radiation received can impair imaging quality; it is necessary to investigate the conditions under which the use of polarization will improve imaging and under which conditions it cannot, including atmospheric conditions, IR radiation from various materials and environments polarization characteristics and other factors. Usually, when the signal-to-noise ratio of the polarized image signal is above 10, it is necessary to use polarized imaging.
